This weekend we were very honored to had Valdas Misevicius (Mr. Aivascope) and his daughter over at our office, all the way from Lithuania. They brought a few very cool and exciting lens projects. One of these lenses is the highly anticipated Aivascope 1.75x with an improved helicoid which we will also see in the December batch of Aivascope 1.5x . It has better grease leak protection compared to the current ones and an all new skew locking ring. The 1.75 is slightly bigger than the 1.5x and thus also a bit more heavy it features a 40mm rear element and we found it can cover a 50mm focal length in 36×24mm sensor dimension which gives a 2.63 aspect ratio without vignetting. The lens is amber coated with a few hints of magenta. Close focus is 80cm. Aivascope is planning to ship the first small batch to us in January, we are almost sold out on the 1.75x , if you want any info please reach out to info@gafpagear.com We plan to upload all specs and photos and footage shot with this adapter this week as a new entry to our shop. Coverage / distortion here is the most ugly but also an important test.. bottlenecking the scope with a 50mm pancolar. and reveiling its distortion. All specs are in the video. As you can expect the most extreme thing you can do is do pans, with straight lines close to the camera (1.5m away is the window). Also as you can expect there is some anamorphic breathing going on, when going from infinity to close focus (80cm) > this is no sharpness test, zero contrast ratios (overcast), and a 50mm 1.9 wfo 🙂

The total weight of the 1.75X including the Rod support is 1.4Kg which is about 600 grams more than the 1.5X. Close focus is the same as the 1.5X namely 80cm, and we found that the scope is able to resolve a 50mm focal length on a 36X24 sensor which equals a 2.63 aspect ratio. When finalizing in 2.39 a shorter focal length would be possible. The 1.75X has a similar coating to the 1.5X which has predominantly amber and a hint of magenta. the front filter thread is 82mm The price of the Aivascope 1.75X will be 2300 euro ex vat, if you are within the EU and you can provide us with a VAT number we won’t add VAT to the invoice. Most of you will not go such wide, but it’s good to know whats possible. This was taken with a 36X 24 sensor, so leading to around 2.66 cinemascope aspect.

Hi Jerome, I would like to know the front filter thread size and front diameter size of the 1.75x. I’ve heard the price will be around the same as the 1.5x can you confirm this? And in comparison to a DIY anamorphic solution, such as a 16h + FM, what would be the pros/cons? Cheers! 🙂

Biometar 80mm in OG Biometar 80mm in 36X 24mm in open gate, not the sharpest taking lens, but a beautiful ‘ vintage ’ zeiss rendition.

NIKON pancake 50mm in 16X22mm okay now we saw the usual suspects, what about a sharp pancake in 16X22 mm image size. A nikon pancake 1.8 50mm multicoat (i have a edition that doesn’ t have blue green coat but magenta purple amber). set at f2.8. even though the MAVO edge has low rolling shutter, anamorphic will increase rolling shutter artefacts by the number of it squeeze ratio , in this case 1.75X. I love the 16X 22 mode in the mavo lf which will get you extremely close to native 2.39. I don’t like a 50m with 1.75X in open gate (36X 24mm), even though it works its too extreme aov for me, but if anyone wants to see proof, a pancake can cover without severe vignetting, shoot me a message here. IN this example, same light as in previous example, exact same grading. \

Have you done a bokeh comparison between 1.5x and 1.75x? I don’t need the width of the 1.75x, but is the bokeh substantially more stretched and smeary on the 1.75x? Trying to evaluate the benefit of that added weight of the 1.75x over the 1.5x.

Peter Hey peter! Oval bokeh happens by the squared law. You can also get big stretched ovals with a 1.33 when you close focus in combination with longer focal length and a fast aperture. It s the same as with large format vs s35. with s35 you can still get tiny dof with fast lenses compared to larger format lenses that are oftennot as fast, or when they are fast are soft.

@Jerome I can’t seem to PM you, so just a reminder of my desire for brick wall test stills shot (filling the frame) of the aivascope 1.75x, not desqueezed and not corrected for distortion (so straight out the camera), with what you believe is the ‘widest’ taking lens it can handle. I’d ask for 36×24mm sensor, but just list the camera you used and I can work it out.

Wide open and at f5.6 will do. Also doing this for the Aivascope 1.5x would really help too.

@Jerome Thanks for the explanation! I believe what you’re describing are the factors that determine depth of field in general, but I appreciate your point that, the shallower the depth of field, the more we will see ovals. What I’m interested to see is, all other things being equal (focal distance, focal length, and aperture), how does the bokeh compare between the 1.5x and the 1.75x? In other words, how do the two lenses draw differently? Any chance we could see a comparison? Thanks!

a few more examples.
the first is in s35 silent aperture (open gate) which is 18X24mm leading to a 2.1 aspect ratio (aivascope in normal mode, so not inverted). Shot with a voigtlander ultron 40mm.
The two others are shot in 36X15.06 with a nikon pancake 50mm and the scope inverted leading to a 1.37 aspect. also taking lens was wide open, so a bit crazy,

Planing on adapting the 1.75x to my Red V-Raptor with a set of Leica R’s(ef mount). Do you sell a 55-40mm step down ring, or have any recommendations on the nest rings to use and where to get them? Also curious about coverage… will the Leica R 35mm get full coverage at 8k or s35 6k?

Anyone an idea what Justin Philip used on his aivascope. It’s seems like an adapter to a bigger outer diameter to minimize the light leak. And so he can just slide on and off the aivascope inbetween changing the taking lens.

Check it out. It’s a smart way and I would love to order it before the 1.75x Aivascope comes :-)

Zhong hey zhong this is just a stepup with quite some depth to it, you will notice that light spill wont be that much of an issue, if you siomply slide the aivascope to the taking lens, however we recommend to go with xume magnetic adapter,s it will both decrease lens wiggle to a bare minum and also closes the gap when it comes to light leaks. if you need mor info let me know

Jerome @Zhong - could you guys share more info on how you’re using the XUME magnetic adapter. From what I have seen the magnetic part is on the filter and the filter tray on the lens is not magnetic. Is there a version where the filter tray / receiver is magnetic or is there a 62mm thread magnet that would go onto the back of the Aivascope 1.75x? Many thanks for any tips.
