Full frame #make135greatagain
What’s full frame? I dived into this and could only found one good example. I had to go to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam where they are reconstructing Rembrandts “nightwatch”. The painting was cut (both sides) a few centuries back to fit in a room and the cutted pieces were thrown away. Because a small reproduction exists of this painting they were able to reconstruct the missing pieces gaining back the full frame. Well it still needs a frame . But you get my point.

But let’s get real what’s this rubbish terminology got to do with cinema or videography?! Nothing! It keeps me wondering where this all started with. I guess It started with half frame and the battle for 8 perf 135 digital cameras between Canon and nikon where Canon finally came out with their weird Full Frame term because they wanted to make people aware that their camera had a bigger sensor. I don’t even know if this is historically correct, but point is that it doesn’t make sense.
And here we are.. the most common question on fb film related groups is “does it cover full frame”.
Ironically full frame in cinema is 4 perf 35mm where you use the full frame without sound (silent aperture). But in this case it refers to s35 film and the largest portion you can use of the negative within this format. But the other ff refers to other formats being smaller or even worse “cropped” and inferior.
Full frame is an arrogant term as if any frame smaller than that is cropped?! As if the target is to make sensors as big as possible. As if you cannot create shallow dof with a s35 lens? as if yo cannot make a good s35 image sensor? Did you know s35 is the sweet spot for lens designers ? You can keep the lens relatively small with good specs and wide aperture.. look at cookes7 vs cooke s5. About the same lens but the cooke covers 135 vista vision. And therefore is bigger and more weighty. Lf has an edge over s35 for sensor designers because bigger pixel um is better for sensitivity and with the graving for high pixel count its harder to make a s35 sensor. But I believe that in the future s35 will be back as dominating format. And the fun thing ! Shooting s35 with the Edge almost looks the same as in LF format , and with even lower rolling shutter artefacts! So with the edge you can shoot any format 135 s35 s16! I love that. To add to that most so called s35 sensor camera in the market are not s35 , if you shoot anamorphic or academy ratio you have to crop in. With the edge we have both 16×22mm and 18×22 and 18×24mm . The real full frame s35 🙂 .
Now one question to you all!! How about naming 36×24mm 135LF or vista vision? Or do you have a better name for it?
