Third- Party Partners and Accessories

I come from the RED Digital Camera Community where RED has approved of a lot of Third- Party Partner’s accessories to be used with their cameras. Other than Movcam, has Kinefinity allowed or will allow additional Third-Party Vendors to develop additional accessories for the Mavo Edge?

Kinefinity would approve any third party accessories manufacturer to make parts for Kinefinity. Bit if we are realistic then we can see that Kinefinity is a very small brand, and incomparable with RED. For third party designer’s volume is ofc the biggest condition for deciding on which brands to support. But let’s also look at something different. For instance a ARRI camera needs a battery cage (mini and mini lf) and can’t be used out of the box. The Kinefinity MAVO Edge is working out of the box , doesn’t need battery plates or a complicated cage (like mirrorless cameras or blackmagic pocket etc). The only thing it needs is a top plate and a LWS Rod support, from there everything Is industry standard. On e the Edge is out for real and has proven to sell good other companies might chime in, we’ve spoken to bright tangerine and vocal a while back but due to Covid19 they were less adventurous about going to design for relatively small brands.
Which accessories would you need and which accessories do you think are lacking , or need to be improved?

Thanks Jerome! Yeah, I kinda figured that because Kinefinity, for all practical purposes, isn’t really a well known name in the U.S Cinema Market yet so there might not yet be an incentive to start investing much in the way third-party Accessories. Like you stated, The Mavo Edge has so many In/Out ports standard and usually that’s the area where most of your third-party vendors would exploit. I was thinking mostly of a handgrip that accessed most of the main menu functionality with better hand navigating capabilities than the jog-wheel on left of the camera. A handgrip with much better integration with the Mavo Edge than just a generic Start/ Stop Controller.

I also would like to see more Third- Party accessories from companies with more experience with 5G technology than Kinefinity whom would better be able to exploit those 5G expansion Ports more than Kinefinity are willing to or able to. Maybe just a few more cage options than those offered by Movcam. Also from Kinefinity, “ touch screen” monitor capabilities for better menu functionality so you wouldn’t have to use the on-body buttons so much. I also prefer a Touch Screen monitor so I wouldn’t have to use a separate tablet or Phone App with touch screen capabilities that you have to use unreliable wifi connections with.

Hey Rand, I myself have a different philosophy if it comes to camera designs and even though I work closely together with Kinefinity and we have lots in common we don’t necessarily share the exact same vision. So keep that in mind, so when I reject something that won’t mean that Kinefinity will reject that.
That said I reject touch monitors , I hate finger prints and don’t need to change settings. I choose which project fps I need, which resolution and code before a shoot, I might change shutter angle or sensor fps. But with kinefinity you can even make presets recalling them with one click of a button. The buttons of the Edge are really well designed so that you don’t accidentally touch them, there’s even a lock function (only rec will work in that scenario) a camera isn’t a smartphone its a image capture device you have the focus on the lens and the iris and the e-nd of the camera. And a rec button. If you want to change settings om the fly there are dedicated buttons for each cinematographic parameter.
For 5g kinefinity will work together with a specialised company. I do t think it would work out if other companies would try to make something. Its highly integrated (like with movcam darktower on previous cameras). I hops this helps.v
One question. Which settings Don you want to change quickly on the go?

Jerome as always, thanks for your knowledgeable insight! I would probably want to change from a Preset White Balance( Tungsten, Daylight, Fluorescent, incandescent..etc) to Auto WB with a “ Drop- Down” Menu. Next, maybe the ability to change available Scopes( Vectorscope, Histogram and Parade). The ability to change Zebra settings( 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%). Things like different “ Zoom-in” and “Focus Peaking percentages. Lastly, ProRes quality settings so that I could choose higher quality settings for more quality critical scenes and lower settings for more” Long- Form" scenes( B-reel). To Inable/disable “ False Color”

And I can see better now as to why Kinefinity would want to stick with only one partner in the development of it’s 5G.
